Hungary’s White Card: A Fresh Option for Remote Workers

The Hungary White Card is a new residence option for digital nomads who want to live in Europe while working remotely for a foreign job or business.

This special residence permit was created for non-EU citizens who work online, either for a foreign employer or running their own business registered abroad. It gives you the chance to live in Hungary legally, without moving your economic activity here.

Who Can Apply?

You’re eligible if you:

  • Have a job with a foreign company and do your work online from Hungary, or
  • Own a profitable business outside Hungary and manage it remotely while living here.

The key rule: You can’t work for a Hungarian employer or own shares in a Hungarian company. Your income must stay international.

Who Isn’t Eligible?

Not everyone qualifies for the White Card. You won’t be able to apply if:

  • You already meet the requirements for other types of residence permits (like for students, investors, trainees, or guest workers),
  • You’re an asylum seeker or have been granted refugee status or temporary protection,
  • You hold an EU long-term residence permit or an intra-corporate transfer visa,
  • You’re planning to bring your family, unless a child is born in Hungary while you’re staying here.

How to Apply

If You’re Outside Hungary

You’ll need to apply at a Hungarian consulate in your country of citizenship or legal residence. In some cases, honorary consulates or authorized third-party service centers may also handle applications.

If there’s no Hungarian representation in your country, you may be able to apply in another country where you legally reside, but you’ll need to provide solid documentation explaining why.

If You’re Already in Hungary

Good news: if you entered Hungary visa-free, and you’re staying legally, you can apply from inside the country. Here’s how:

  • Online, through the Enter Hungary portal, or
  • In person, at the immigration office based on your place of stay.

If someone else (like a lawyer or company) is applying for you, they must use the online platform.

How Long Can You Stay?

  • The White Card is valid for up to one year.
  • You can renew it once for another year, as long as the purpose of your stay doesn’t change.

Thinking of extending? Be sure to:

  • Submit your renewal request at least 30 days before your current permit expires,
  • The Hungary White Card is limited to one renewal and requires staying at least 90 days in any 180-day period.
